Always try alternative dispute resolution (ADR) first \u2014 it&#8217;s usually free, faster, and less stressful:<\/h5>\n<p>Direct negotiation with the business<br \/>\nOmbudsman schemes (binding on the company for many sectors like utilities, some trades)<br \/>\nMediation \u2014 neutral third party helps both sides agree (great for service disputes).<\/p>\n<p>If ADR doesn&#8217;t work or isn&#8217;t available, court might be the next step \u2013 just remember that, except for the small claims track, if you lose your claim you will, in most, cases, be ordered to pay the other party\u2019s legal costs. In England and Wales, claims are allocated to tracks based on value and complexity:<\/p>\n<p>Small Claims Track \u2014 up to \u00a310,000. Informal, low costs (you usually pay your own expenses even if you win), designed for people to represent themselves. Most consumer and service disputes fit here.<br \/>\nFast Track \u2014 \u00a310,001 to \u00a325,000. More formal, one-day trial usually<br \/>\nIntermediate Track \u2014 \u00a325,001 to \u00a3100,000 for cases manageable in up to three days<br \/>\nMulti-Track \u2014 over \u00a3100,000 or complex cases.<\/p>\n<p>You can start most money claims online via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moneyclaim.gov.uk\/web\/mcol\/welcome\">Money Claim Online<\/a> \u2014 it&#8217;s quick and inexpensive to issue.
