Building Works & Other Services

When you hire tradespeople for building works or similar services — like extensions, roofing, fitted kitchens, garage conversions, landscaping, gardening, patio laying, or decorating — the Consumer Rights Act 2015 requires the work to be done with reasonable care and skill, in a reasonable time (unless agreed otherwise), and at a reasonable price if no quote was fixed.

This covers both the workmanship and any materials supplied (those must be satisfactory quality, fit for purpose, and as described).

Typical problems: poor-quality work (leaks, uneven surfaces, faulty installations), jobs left unfinished, damage to your property, unexpected extra charges, or work not matching what was promised.

Steps to take:

  • Give the trader a reasonable chance to inspect and fix the issue — they're usually entitled to try putting it right
  • If repeat performance isn't possible (e.g., too much damage) or would cause significant inconvenience, you can claim a price reduction (up to 100% in serious cases) or, for very bad work, treat the contract as ended and seek a refund for the faulty part
  • Keep detailed evidence: photos before/after, messages/emails, quotes, invoices, and notes of conversations.

Many disputes settle once a formal letter outlines the Consumer Rights Act breaches. If needed, we can help negotiate, pursue through ADR (like mediation), or advise on small claims court.
